The 2011 Greater Vancouver housing market began with heightened demand in regional hot spots and concluded with greater balance between seller supply and buyer demand. In a report released by the Economics Research team at RBC, the ratio of pre-tax household income it takes to own a home declined in the third quarter of 2010. The report cited lower home prices and mortgage rates as reasons for the upswing. The Bank of Canada today announced that it is raising its target for the overnight rate by one-quarter of one percentage point to 1/2 per cent. Fixed term mortgage rates have increased by one of the largest one day increases in recent memory. The posted 5 yr rate has risen by 6 tenths of a percent, to just under 6%. The BC Government has announced that it will provide a rebate on the 12 per cent Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) for homes costing up to $525,000 from the previously announced $400,000.
